COLOGNE, GERMANY - A six-year-old German boy who was dying of cancer has rid himself of the tumour, just three months after being touched by Pope Benedict XVI in one of the moving moments of the pontiff's first trip abroad.
"Victor does not have cancer any more," his mother Michaela told the Cologne newspaper Express this week. His hair is growing back.
During a walkabout in Cologne, the German-born pope stopped when he saw the seriously ill child. Two years after his cancer broke out, Victor was bald from chemotherapy and had to wear a respiratory mask because even a minor infection could have killed him.
Benedict placed both hands on the child's head and blessed 6j
him. The boy said beforehand that with just one word he would be healed.
"It wasn't a miracle," insisted his mother, 43, "but it came close to a miracle that my boy survived all his pain. The doctors, the transfusion of cells he got in summer, they all helped." f&

"What came out of that moment was strength and faith that everything would turn out right in the end," she said.
No more sign of cancer had been found in Victor, but tests will continue as relapses do occur.
Victor's father, Felix, 45, said, "The papal blessing combined with our faith in God gave all of us enormous strength."
According to the German Cancer Society, current recovery rates for children with cancer in Germany are around 75 per cent.
