NEW YORK -- A former Merrill Lynch broker has pleaded guilty to defrauding a 95-year-old client out of $321,648 by stealing checks from her account and forging her signature.COS4\

Peter Lau, 39, of Hauppauge, on Long Island, pleaded guilty late Tuesday to second-degree grand larceny before Acting State Supreme Court Justice Barry Kron.V

Prosecutors said Lau stole 28 checks from the victim, Carrie Cummins, a 95-year-old retired high school teacher from Forest Hills, Queens, between June 2004 and December 2005. They said he forged her signature on the checks and deposited the money into his own credit card accounts.HX~$qe

"As a broker, the defendant had a fiduciary responsibility to act in his client's best interests and to act honestly," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. Kron indicated that at Lau's sentencing on Sept. 20 he would impose a sentence of 1½ to 4½ years in prison and order the defendant to make full restitution to his victim.XSbE
